The Brothers provide a large area for the homeless and destitute, mostly elderly men and women. A new home has recently been dedicated for little children, many of whom are handicapped and homeless. Including the children, the Brothers care for about 180 destitute people. The program of outreach ministry the Brothers have begun is a center for people in the city. People receive water and food just for the asking.
Sunday Mass on the Monastery grounds is a Mass with Haitian music as well as spoken in Creole...the native language. Speaking of the Monastery grounds, the Brothers have kept it so beautiful with many plants, flowers and fruit trees. Many city folks come to just bask in the beauty inside these walls. The roads in Cap-Haitien, as in most of Haiti, are intolerable. The roads between Port Au Prince and Cap Haitian are so terrible that what should take 3 hours by vehicle now takes 10 to 12 hours. The presence of the Brothers bring a tremendous sense of hope for these forgotten people.
VOLUNTEERS: As in the other missions the needs are great. Volunteers have come and installed a solar system for electricity. They have seen to it that three wells were dug for water. Many city folks come to take the water from these wells. Volunteers also paved the road to the Monastery for much easier access. Haiti is really in need of all kinds of supplies. There is no problem with Customs as in other countries. A nice Hotel nearby have housed our volunteers in Haiti. Churches who want to help can begin food drives. With the help of your community church, many people can be fed. For more information about starting a food drive and for a list of foods needed, please call our National Office in Atlanta 404-248-1197. |
