Welcome to the

Missionaries of the Poor

The Missionaries of the poor is an international monastic order of Brothers dedicated to Joyful Service with Christ on the Cross to serve the poorest of the poor. The order was started in 1981 by Father Richard HoLung and has now grown to over 500 brothers.

They have free missions around the globe.  Their main home is in Kingston, Jamaica.  There they maintain six mission homes.  The Brothers also serve the Lord with their acts of mercy in India, the Philippines (Naga City & Cebu), Haiti, Uganda & Kenya.

The Brothers welcome visitors to come and join them in their work.  They welcome all to join their spirituality and prayer life.  Its mission is to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ primarily by performing the corporal works of mercy of Jesus and secondarily through liturgy, preaching, music, teaching and sacraments.

To learn more about their work and their spirituality please look through our entire web site.

MISSION STATEMENT

We desire to be a manifestation of the presence of Christ in the world as He continues to live and care for the poorest.  We do this through a life of prayer, communal living and free service to the least in society, offering primarily the corporal works of mercy and secondarily, the spiritual works of mercy.

Our corporal works of mercy are directed at those in the lowest rung of the social ladder.  This includes:

  •   Housing the homeless

  •   Feeding the hungry

  •   Taking care of street children

  •   Working with prisoners

  •   Caring for those with such diseases as AIDS and leprosy

Our spiritual works of mercy include:

  •   Preaching

  •   Directing retreats and missions

  •   Evangelization through music and song

  •   Counseling and listening to the poor in their struggles

As an international missionary religious institute, we will have members from different countries and races spread out in various countries, living a life of the vows of poverty, chastity, obedience and free service to the least of our brothers and sisters.  In our diversity and unity in Christ, we announce the arrival of God’s kingdom.
