The international headquarters for the Missionaries of the Poor and their work is located in Kingston, Jamaica, the murder capital of the world and one of the poorest ghettoes on earth. Nevertheless, despite the challenges of the area, the love of Christ radiates throughout the world from this place.
There are three MOP monasteries with over 200 brothers in Kingston and five apostolate centers. In the mountains north of Kingston, the MOP own and operate the beautiful Mt. Tabor Retreat Center, beneath which is the Beatitudes House for handicapped children who live on the mountain.
Hundreds of volunteers travel to Kingston every year to pray and work with the brothers, staying in several guest houses located at each monastery. For more information about the works of the MOP in Jamaica, please use the links on the right.
Jamaica is an English-speaking island in the Caribbean Sea. It became an British colony in 1655 and the head of state is England's Queen Elizabeth. While the island is known internationally for its vacation spots on the north coast, Jamaicans suffer great poverty elsewhere on the island. The Missionaries of the Poor work in Kingston, which is the island's capital city and most populated area.
